There are a number of reasons why algorithms do not contribute to a more just world. One reason is that they are often opaque, meaning that it is difficult to understand how they work and what factors they take into account. This can lead to decisions that are unfair or discriminatory, as well as to a lack of accountability when things go wrong. Additionally, algorithms can reinforce existing biases and inequalities, rather than challenging them. For example, if data from a particular population is underrepresented in a dataset used to train a machine learning algorithm, this can result in poorer performance for that group. Finally, algorithms can be weaponized, for instance when they are used to target ads or content that is designed to stoke division and hatred. In sum, algorithms can be a force for good or for harm, depending on how they are used. While they can sometimes contribute to a more just world, more often they serve to further entrench existing injustices.
