Degree of risk/experimentation/ play in making the process
This is my first time sewing anything and specifically chose to hand sew it rather than using a domestic sewing machine.
Written Reflection
Object Story
I got the slingshot at a 99c store with my friend Pierce last year. After using it a bit the rubber tubing broke and I stopped using it. After that, it sat in my drawer collecting dust until I decided to reconstruct it into a pencil case.
Embodied Lessons
It is always better to have more seam allowance than less. It’s easier to cut it off in the end than attaching more material or re-cutting a piece.
Thimbles have been invented for a reason and your fingers will be thankful for using them.
Connection to selected text
In this project, I chose to hand sew this pencil case rather than machine sew. This decision was largely influenced by my text companion, “Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work”. This book speaks about the intricacies of the human hand and how technology makes people overlook how things are actually done and work. I wanted to fully understand the construction of my pencil case so I did it all by hand.
